Uttar Pradesh saw a sharp overnight weather shift on Tuesday, and more disruption is on the way. Here is what residents need to know.
What happened last night?
Around midnight on Tuesday, strong winds swept across large parts of UP, bringing light rain and drizzle in several areas. Wind speeds crossed 30 kmph, and the sudden storm caused power supply disruptions across a wide stretch — electricity substations shut down supply as a precaution, plunging many neighbourhoods into darkness.
Two-wheeler riders found it particularly difficult to navigate the roads amid the strong winds. Outer areas of Lucknow were hit harder than the centre.
How hot did it get before the storm?
Tuesday was no ordinary day weatherwise even before the storm arrived. Daytime temperatures climbed to 37.3 degrees Celsius — the highest recorded this year so far.
Many households in the city had already switched on air conditioners and coolers in March itself, a sign of how early the heat had set in.
Night temperatures too were running 5.2 degrees above normal, recorded at 23 degrees Celsius. Humidity lingered through the evening before the winds picked up after 10 pm, after which dark clouds rolled in rapidly.
Why did the weather change?
The Amausi meteorological centre has attributed the change to a western disturbance that became active over Iran. The disturbance was originally expected to reach Lucknow by Monday night but arrived a day late. Its effects are forecast to ease by Thursday.
Will the heat return?
Yes — and quickly. Within 48 hours of the disturbance passing, temperatures are expected to climb again.
However, there is some longer-term relief in sight: the IMD has forecast that most parts of India, barring the eastern region and parts of the northeast, will see maximum temperatures at or below normal between April and June this year.
What to expect on April 3 and 4?
Residents should brace for another round of storms. The weather department has forecast winds of 30 to 40 kmph along with rain on April 3 and 4.
The western disturbance is likely to remain active through the entire month of April, meaning rain spells could return repeatedly.
Daytime temperatures this month are expected to stay below 40 degrees Celsius — offering some respite from what had been a bruising start to the summer season.
