What was meant to be a joyful wedding night in Uttar Pradesh ended in chaos after a dispute over the bride’s pet dog led to a violent clash between the two families — and ultimately the cancellation of the marriage.
The incident took place late Wednesday at a guest house in the Khaga Kotwali area of Fatehpur district. The bride’s family had travelled from Prayagraj in buses and private vehicles, while the groom’s side arrived in a traditional wedding procession. The evening began on a happy note, and the initial rituals, including the exchange of garlands, were completed without any trouble.
According to the groom, Sumit Kesharwani, the couple had been in a relationship for some time and had earlier eloped to marry at an Arya Samaj temple in Kanpur. After talks between the families, it was decided that the marriage would be formally celebrated in Fatehpur with full ceremonies and guests from both sides.
However, the atmosphere changed in the early hours of Thursday. Around 4 am, jewellery presentation rituals were underway at the wedding altar when the bride’s pet dog, tied a short distance away by her family, started barking repeatedly, according to a report by India Today.
A young man from the groom’s side, reportedly annoyed by the noise, allegedly beat the dog. This act angered the bride’s relatives, and an argument soon broke out. The situation quickly turned violent.
Eyewitnesses cited by the outlet said sticks and chairs were used during the scuffle. Three members from the bride’s side — Shubham Gupta, Rishabh Kesarwani and Sangeeta Devi — suffered head injuries and were left bleeding. One or two people from the groom’s family also sustained minor injuries. Panic spread through the venue, and several guests ran away when the police arrived.
The matter was taken to the Khaga police station, where officers intervened and stopped the wedding proceedings. The injured were treated at the Central Health Centre (CHC) and later sent back to Prayagraj.
On Thursday, members of both families returned to the police station for further discussions in the presence of local residents. During questioning, the bride clearly stated that she did not wish to continue with the marriage.
A panchayat meeting was then held between senior members of both families. Gifts and money exchanged during the ceremonies were returned, and the two sides reached a mutual settlement. No formal complaint was filed, and neither family pursued legal action.
