A woman who went missing three decades ago in the United States has been found alive and safe. Christina Marie Plante was 13 years old when she went missing in May 1994 from Star Valley, Arizona, after she “vanished without a trace from her community", according to a statement issued by the Gila County Sheriff’s Office on April 1.

Investigators had said she was last seen leaving home on foot to visit a nearby stable where her horse was kept and “was not seen again".

Now 45, Plante has been located and identified, authorities confirmed, though further details about her circumstances have not been disclosed due to privacy reasons. The sheriff’s office reiterated that “out of respect for Christina’s privacy and well-being, additional details will not be released at this time".

Officials credited the breakthrough to renewed investigative efforts, stating, “Utilising advances in technology, modern investigative techniques and detailed case review, detectives developed new leads that ultimately led to a breakthrough."

For years, her disappearance remained unresolved despite extensive searches and national attention, eventually becoming a “cold case" — a term used for investigations that remain open but unsolved due to lack of evidence. The case gained fresh momentum after the department established a Cold Case Unit to revisit such files.

Authorities said the development highlights the significance of re-examining long-unsolved cases using modern tools. They also expressed gratitude to investigators and community members who kept the case alive, adding, “The Gila County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to pursuing all unresolved cases and encourages anyone with information regarding other cold cases to come forward."
