Profile Of Key Leaders To Be Inducted Today

Swapan Dasgupta

Journalist, political commentator and politician Swapan Dasgupta is among the prominent names under consideration. Dasgupta has been an influential voice within India’s right-wing political discourse and has written extensively for leading English-language newspapers. He currently represents the Rashbehari Assembly constituency in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.

A former nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, Dasgupta was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2015 for his contributions to literature and education.

Jagannath Chatterjee

Former journalist Jagannath Chatterjee is also likely to be inducted into the ministry. Chatterjee is known for his long association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2021 and contested the Assembly election from Siuri but was defeated. In the 2026 Assembly election, however, he secured victory from the Siuri constituency in Birbhum district.

Tapas Roy

Veteran politician Tapas Roy is another strong contender for a cabinet berth. Roy began his political career with the Congress before joining the Trinamool Congress. Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election, he joined the BJP.

Although he was unsuccessful in his first electoral contest after joining the BJP, he remained active within the party and later won the Maniktala Assembly seat. He also headed the BJP’s manifesto committee during the Assembly election campaign.

Manoj Oraon

Manoj Oraon, MLA from Kumargram, is expected to represent North Bengal in the new ministry. Born in Kumargram in Alipurduar district, Oraon earned a Bachelor of Education degree from Eastern Dooars B.Ed. Training College in 2011.

He has served as an assistant teacher at Tufanganj Vivekananda Vidyalaya (H.S.) since 2011. Oraon joined the BJP in 2017, contested the 2021 Assembly election and currently represents the Kumargram constituency in the Assembly.

Shankar Ghosh

Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh is also likely to find a place in the cabinet. A BJP leader who previously spent many years in Left politics, Ghosh has represented the Siliguri Assembly constituency since 2021 and was re-elected in 2026.

In 2024, he was appointed Chief Whip of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. His inclusion would provide significant representation to North Bengal in the state government.

Dudh Kumar Mondal

Dudh Kumar Mondal, BJP MLA from the Mayureswar constituency in Birbhum district, is another name being considered for ministerial responsibility. Mondal is serving his first term in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and is regarded as an emerging leader within the party.

Dr Sharadwat Mukherjee

Oncologist-turned-politician Dr Sharadwat Mukherjee is among the most prominent professional faces likely to be inducted into the ministry. Elected from the Bidhannagar Assembly constituency in 2026, Mukherjee is expected to play an important role in the government’s health-related initiatives.

Arjun Singh

Veteran politician Arjun Singh is also among the leaders likely to be included in the expanded cabinet. Singh has had a long political career and has been associated with both the Trinamool Congress and the BJP at different points.

He joined the BJP ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election and won the Barrackpore parliamentary seat by defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Dinesh Trivedi. After the 2021 Assembly election, Singh returned to the Trinamool Congress before rejoining the BJP. His administrative and electoral experience is seen as a key factor behind his likely inclusion in the ministry.

An official announcement regarding the cabinet expansion is expected on Monday. Sources suggest that the final list will aim to balance regional representation, political experience and professional expertise while ensuring representation from different parts of the state.

Suvendu Adhikari took oath as Chief Minister on May 9 after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a majority in the West Bengal Assembly elections, ending the Trinamool Congress’ 15 years in power.

In the first phase of government formation, four ministers were sworn in along with Adhikari. They were Agnimitra Paul, Nisith Pramanik, Ashok Kirtania and Kshudiram Tudu.

Monday’s cabinet expansion is expected to complete the formation of the Council of Ministers. Several senior BJP leaders are likely to be given key portfolios in the government.
