League of Legends pro Gabriël “Bwipo” Rau has set off a storm of controversy online after clips from his recent Twitch broadcast resurfaced. On September 9, 2025, footage from a stream earlier this month spread across Reddit, X, and TikTok, showing the Belgian-Brazilian player making remarks about women competing in games, which many have labeled sexist.

Bwipo suggests women should avoid playing during ‘the wrong time of the month’

During his September 2 livestream, Bwipo spoke candidly about what he called his “experience” in competitive gaming. At one point, he suggested that women struggle with performance depending on their menstrual cycle.“There is a time in the month where you should not be f**king playing competitive games as a woman, in my opinion,” he said, before adding that irritation and mood shifts were “obvious” to him in past experiences.

He went on to clarify that he didn’t view his words as sexist, but instead as “realistic solutions,” even suggesting women use a secondary account when going through that phase of the month. His attempt to frame the comment as constructive, however, only amplified criticism.

Community backlash as fans call comments outdated and sexist

The clips quickly went viral, and many within the esports and streaming community expressed frustration. Fans argued that his take minimized the challenges women already face in entering pro gaming.

“And this right here is why education is important, kids,” one X user posted.“Yikes, this dude's takes are wilder than a hurricane. Oof,” another X user commented.Memes and sarcastic reactions also circulated, with users mocking his “not trying to be sexist” disclaimer followed by what they described as “textbook sexism.”

FlyQuest responds with suspension and donation to women in gaming causes

Bwipo’s team, FlyQuest, responded swiftly with an official statement. The organization condemned the remarks, calling them “antithetical” to its mission of making gaming inclusive.

FlyQuest announced that Bwipo will be suspended for the next series of the LTA playoffs and that his event prize money will be donated to initiatives supporting women in esports. “Comments that might discourage even one young woman from pursuing her dream of becoming a pro player harm the future of esports,” the team wrote.

What’s next for Bwipo?

As of now, Bwipo has not publicly addressed the backlash. With his suspension in place and criticism still mounting, all eyes are on how he will respond and whether this controversy will mark a turning point in his career and reputation.
