After days of suspense and rounds to the Lok Bhavan, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) — led by actor-turned-politician Vijay — is likely to form the government in Tamil Nadu.

On Friday evening, Vijay met with the state governor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, and declared he had the support of 118 MLAs, the exact number needed for a majority in Tamil Nadu.

Despite emerging as the single-largest party in the state, the TVK fell short of the majority mark, leading to a hunt for allies. A breakthrough came when the Congress extended support to the party, with the tally reaching 113.

But the governor told Vijay, “Come back with 118“. Once again, the TVK chief came back to square-one. Finally, he managed to garner the support of 118 MLAs, when parties including the VCK, CPI, and CPI(M) announced their support for the TVK, helping it achieve the 118-mark.

What Happens Next?

Law veterans argue if no party or an alliance secures a clear mandate, a governor’s duty is to invite the single-largest party, in this case, the TVK, and ask them to prove their majority on the floor of the State Assembly.

According to sources, Vijay assured the governor of the support of 118 MLAs. However, an official confirmation from the governor is still awaited.

Scenario 1: If The Governor Accepts Vijay’s Proposal

In case Governor Arlekar accepts the TVK Chief’s proposal, it will pave the way for the swearing-in of Vijay as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Scenario 2: If The Governor Remains Unconvinced

If the governor is unconvinced, he might ask Vijay to prove his mandate on the floor of the State Assembly.

The Assembly election resulted in a hung verdict, with TVK winning 108 seats in the 234 member House. The DMK secured 59 seats, AIADMK 47, PMK 4, IUML 2, CPI 2 and CPI(M) 2, while BJP, DMDK and AMMK won one seat each.
