Commonly referred to as “Air Force Two," the designation applies to any US Air Force plane transporting the Vice President, rather than a specific aircraft.

In most cases, the Vice President travels aboard a Boeing C-32, a modified version of the Boeing 757-200. Operated by the US Air Force’s 89th Airlift Wing, the aircraft is designed for executive missions, equipped with advanced communication systems that allow secure connectivity during international travel.

The C-32 is built for both functionality and endurance. It can cover distances of up to 5,500 nautical miles without refuelling and cruises at around 537 miles per hour, making it well-suited for long-haul diplomatic journeys. Its onboard layout is tailored to support official duties while in transit, ensuring continuity of government operations.

Inside, the aircraft is divided into multiple sections. The front includes a communications centre, galley, lavatory, and business-class seating. It also includes a private stateroom that features a foldable bed, seating area, and dedicated facilities. Additional sections are configured for meetings and staff, with space for aides and officials accompanying the delegation.

While “Air Force Two" is the standard call sign, it is not always used. For security reasons, especially during sensitive missions, the aircraft may operate under a Special Air Mission (SAM) designation to reduce visibility in public tracking systems. This adjustment helps maintain discretion and enhances safety during high-profile diplomatic travel.
