‘What Is This, Yaar’: Lok Sabha Speaker Raps Congress MP For Unparliamentary Language

Speaker Pulls Up MP for Calling Chair ‘Yaar’ in Lok Sabha

During the Parliament Budget Session on Tuesday, Lok Sabha Speaker Krishna Prasad Tenneti reprimanded Congress MP KC Venugopal over the use of language in the House. During a ruckus while LoP Rahul Gandhi was speaking, Congress MP KC Venugopal addressed the Speaker as “yaar" while Rahul Gandhi was speaking. The Speaker objected and cited House protocol and decorum.

“What did you say just now? What is this, yaar? This is Lok Sabha. This is Parliament. You cannot address the Chair as yaar. Please take back your words. Respect the Chair. This is against the decorum of the House," Tenneti said.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 3 p.m. after disruptions during Rahul Gandhi’s speech. Rahul Gandhi alleged that he was not being allowed to speak as he referred again to the unpublished memoir of former Army Chief MM Naravane.

Chaos over Naravane’s memoir

Chaotic scenes and shouting were seen in the Lok Sabha as proceedings began. Rahul Gandhi once again raised a magazine article on Naravane’s unpublished memoir, saying he wanted to speak on national security as part of the discussion on the President’s address.

He said he only wanted to make a statement on what happened between India and China and how the Prime Minister reacted, and questioned why he was being stopped. Several BJP MPs objected to his remarks, leading to disruptions. The Chair appealed for order during the discussion.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said the President’s address had placed strong emphasis on national security and India’s relations with Pakistan and China. He referred to an “authenticated" point in the speech regarding the Prime Minister’s response to key developments.

Rahul Gandhi said the China-US conflict now dominates global affairs and is central to India’s foreign policy path. 

“A very important matter in the President’s speech is a matter relating to national security. Our relationship between the Pakistanis, the Chinese, and us. There is a very important point in this article that I have authenticated. It speaks about the PM’s reaction…Our President’s address was about the path India has to take. Today. On the world stage, the main issue in international affairs is the conflict between China and the US. This is central to our President’s address. All I am saying is let me make a statement about what happened between China and India and how our PM reacted to it. Why am I being stopped?," said Rahul Gandhi.

The BJP MPs immediately object to Rahul Gandhi speaking again on this issue after Monday’s chaos.
