New Delhi: WhatsApp has started working on a new feature that is going to help users identify potential scam messages from unknown contacts. This feature is going to be called Scam Alert. This feature is specially designed to warn users when a message appears suspicious while keeping chats private.

This system will work entirely on the user’s device, which means WhatsApp will not need to read messages or send them to external servers to detect possible scams.

The Scam Alert feature is still under experimentation, and it is expected to arrive in a future WhatsApp upgrade for Android before a wider rollout. Firstly, it will roll out for WhatsApp Beta testers, and then it will roll out widely to other Android users.

Scam Alert is actually a safety feature that is specially designed to help users spot potentially fraudulent messages. When it is allowed, WhatsApp will analyze incoming messages from unknown contacts and display a warning if the message appears suspicious. This warning will be shown directly inside the chat, by offering the users an additional layer of information before they choose to interact with the sender.

It is designed to assist the users instead of automatically blocking conversations. The key aspect of the feature is its focus on privacy. Scam Alert will process messages entirely on the user’s device, which means the message content will not be sent to WhatsApp’s servers for analysis.

Chats will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption, and WhatsApp will not be able to read the users’ messages while checking for potential scams. It is also expected to work quietly in the background, and other users will not know whether Scam Alert is allowed on the device.
