WhatsApp is all set to roll out a feature which will enable the users to connect and communicate with others without sharing their phone number. WhatsApp primarily works with the help of phone numbers.
However, a recent online report by WABetaInfo suggests that the instant messaging app is now allowing some users to create unique user names for their profiles. As per the report, WhatsApp has now introduced the username feature of beta iPhone users. According to WABetaInfo, the latest beta update of WhatsApp brings unique usernames that act as identifiers for messaging, calling and sharing content. This means that users can now chat or join groups without revealing their personal phone numbers.
The feature is present available for a small number of beta users. Users can check if it is available by navigating to Settings → Profile, where a new “Username” field appears.
WhatsApp’s new username feature designed to enhance privacy
The username system is designed to enhance privacy and simplify connections, especially for those who prefer not to share their phone numbers publicly. It also makes it easier for businesses, creators, and communities to interact securely without exchanging personal contact details.
“WhatsApp has defined a clear set of rules when users will have to choose a username. Usernames cannot start with "www." as this could cause users to believe they are interacting with an official website. For the same reason, usernames also cannot end with a domain (like .com or .net). Usernames must always include at least one letter, so this prevents usernames containing only of numbers or symbols. Additionally, only certain characters are allowed, such as lowercase letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), periods, and underscores.
Users must use between 3-35 characters for their username,” reads the report. The rollout is phased, meaning only a limited number of accounts currently have access. Meta plans to expand the feature to more users over the coming months. The usernames are part of WhatsApp’s broader push to modernize identity and privacy controls, alongside recent updates like multi‑account support, chat lock, and cross‑platform messaging integration.
