While the entire spice rack is open for exploration, there are two distinct ingredients that must stay entirely out of your baby's food: salt and sugar.An infant's kidneys are still maturing and cannot handle added sodium. Refined sugar should also be avoided to protect their developing teeth and ensure they don't develop an early preference for overly sweet foods. This is exactly where spices shine. By skipping salt and sugar and leaning into aromatic herbs and spices, you can create deeply flavourful, vibrant meals that babies genuinely enjoy eating.

Spices do much more than just make food taste delicious; they also support your baby's developing digestive system.

Spices like fennel, ajwain, and cumin carry excellent carminative properties that help soothe a sensitive gut and ease gas. Another powerhouse ingredient is hing (asafoetida). Adding a tiny pinch of hing or cumin powder when cooking potentially gassy foods—like broccoli, cauliflower, or lentils—is an excellent way to prevent tummy discomfort before it even starts.

When you are ready to start seasoning your baby's food, always start small.

Add just a tiny pinch of a single spice to a food they have already tried.
