Sometimes, the best stories about celebrities don’t come from the movies at all. Rather, they happen out of the blue, right in the middle of real life. That’s exactly what happened with Denzel Washington one afternoon in West Hollywood.
Washington is certainly famous for his roles in big films, but that day in 2020, he quietly showed everyone what kind of person he really is.
What happened?
Per TMZ, Denzel was driving through West Hollywood when he spotted a homeless man who looked pretty shaken, right out in the middle of the street with cars zipping by. Instead of just passing by, Denzel pulled over, got out of his car, and walked up to the man. He started talking to him, kept his voice calm, and helped guide him off the road and onto the sidewalk, away from danger.

People nearby watched as Denzel stayed by the man’s side, trying to keep him calm until the police showed up. In the video shared by TMZ, that made its way around social media, one can actually see Denzel put a hand on the man’s shoulder, talking to him quietly. Even when the police arrived, Denzel didn’t just leave. He stood there, sometimes even positioning himself between the man and the officers, helping to keep things peaceful.
To a lot of people watching online, it seemed like he was acting as a kind of mediator, making sure the situation didn’t spiral out of control.Per The Independent, the police checked on the man and decided he didn’t need to be taken in for a mental health evaluation. In the end, they let him go. Before Denzel left, he handed the guy a face mask and something to eat or drink. The officers later called Denzel a “very good Samaritan” who just wanted to make sure the man was safe.

He’s known for his generosity and for helping people out, sometimes in ways that only come to light years later.Per Essence, well-known actor Omari Hardwick once shared that Denzel and his family helped him out when he was struggling, even facing homelessness. And then there’s Chadwick Boseman's recounting of Washington’s big heart. The late ‘Black Panther’ star once told the story of how Denzel secretly paid for him and his classmates to study theater at Oxford when they couldn’t afford it.
