When ‘Drishyam 2’ premiered directly on OTT, the decision sparked intense conversations across the film industry. While audiences embraced the suspense thriller almost instantly, several exhibitors and trade analysts criticised the makers for avoiding a theatrical release.
Years later, the debate surrounding the film’s digital premiere still remains one of the most talked-about moments in Malayalam cinema.
‘Drishyam 2’ became a massive OTT success
Starring Mohanlal in the lead role, ‘Drishyam 2’ arrived as the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster ‘Drishyam’. Soon after its release on streaming platforms, the thriller received overwhelming praise from viewers and critics alike. The film’s gripping narrative and performances quickly turned it into a global talking point, with several industries later showing interest in remaking the project in different languages. At the time, many considered the direct-to-digital release a risky move, especially because big-star films were traditionally associated with theatrical business. However, the film’s reception eventually silenced much of the scepticism.
Mohanlal opened up about the OTT debate
During a past interaction with Hindustan Times, Mohanlal addressed the criticism surrounding the film’s OTT debut and firmly stood by the makers’ decision. The veteran actor highlighted how streaming platforms had transformed the reach of regional cinema.
“OTT platforms provide a global stage and a wider audience which helps an artiste’s hard work reach many people,” he said while explaining the benefits of digital releases. He further added that one of the biggest advantages was accessibility, especially for regional films like ‘Drishyam 2’, which could now connect with viewers worldwide instantly.Reflecting on the film’s worldwide reach, Mohanlal pointed out how the thriller managed to travel beyond language and geographical barriers because of its streaming release.
“The movie premiered globally, making it available to avid cinephiles across countries, helping us reach a wider segment of audience across regions and languages,” the actor shared. The success of ‘Drishyam 2’ also became an important moment for Malayalam cinema, proving that compelling storytelling could attract audiences irrespective of platform.
Mohanlal’s response to the film’s success
Speaking about the appreciation the sequel received after release, the actor credited audiences for recognising quality cinema.
“The success is a testament to the fact that cinema lovers across the world always appreciate good work and support it,” he remarked. His comments were widely interpreted as a response to those who had questioned the digital release strategy before the film premiered. In what many saw as an indirect message to exhibitors unhappy with the OTT release, Mohanlal stressed that films are ultimately made for viewers. According to the actor, reaching the audience matters more than the medium itself. “Audience is the king when it comes to any movie. We create such movies for them alone.
So, it is important that they like what we present,” he stated.Even today, the release of ‘Drishyam 2’ is remembered as a turning point that highlighted the growing influence of OTT platforms in Indian cinema.
