Perhaps clay hasn’t been kind to him this time. But Carlos Alcaraz is already looking ahead.

In a significant blow to the clay-court season, the World No. 2 has officially withdrawn from the French Open due to a wrist injury sustained during the opening round of the Barcelona Open.

“After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland Garros as we wait to evaluate the progress so we can decide when to return to the court," Alcaraz said.

At just 22, Alcaraz has time on his side. Rushing back too soon could risk aggravating the injury, something his team is clearly keen to avoid.

According to reports from Marca, the focus has now shifted firmly to the grass-court season.

The immediate targets? The Queen’s Club Championships, where he is the defending champion, and Wimbledon, where he reached the final last year.

A recording from Spanish journalist Ángel García Muñiz also shed light on the plan.

“He wants to try to get fit to play Queen’s to prepare for Wimbledon. And from the injury to Queen’s, there would be exactly 62 days. [Rafael] Nadal had a similar injury that lasted exactly two months. It obviously made no sense to risk."

“Carlos has it clear. They told me he is in pretty good spirits. He really thinks he is going to come back stronger… and come back very strong on grass."

While any wrist issue is tricky, early indications suggest this isn’t a long-term concern.

“The injury is not as serious… it is an inflammation of the tendon sheath. It is true that it is a painful injury, but it doesn’t appear to be dangerous," Muñiz added.

Alcaraz’s absence dramatically reshapes the Roland Garros landscape.

With the defending champion out, the door swings open — particularly for Jannik Sinner, who now has a clearer path toward a potential career-defining title.

But trust that Carlitos won’t be on the sidelines for far too long.
