West Bengal Polls: In a sweeping electoral mandate, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a decisive victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 207 seats- well past the two-thirds majority mark- and bringing an end to Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) 15-year rule.
Meanwhile, after the decisive victory, the next big question is who will be the state’s first-ever BJP Chief Minister? Several names are already in the running. Among frontrunners is senior BJP leader Agnimitra Paul, who retained her Asansol Dakshin seat by defeating TMC candidate Tapas Banerjee by a margin of 40,839 votes.
Who Is Agnimitra Paul?
As a prominent woman leader with a decisive mandate, the fashion designer-turned politician is now a central figure in the BJP’s plans for government formation in the state.
She currently serves currently as an MLA from the Asansol Dakshin constituency. She was appointed vice-president of the party’s state unit in January 2026, marking a steady rise within the organisation since joining politics in 2019.
Before entering public life, Paul had a successful career as a fashion designer. She ran her own label, INGA, and designed outfits for Bollywood personalities including Sridevi and Mithun Chakraborty. She studied at Jadavpur University and also pursued fashion studies before establishing herself in the industry.
Born on November 25, 1974, in Asansol, Paul comes from a family of academics and doctors. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Banwarilal Bhalotia College (1994) and completed a diploma in fashion designing in 1997. She is married to entrepreneur Partho Paul, and the couple has two sons.
She made her electoral debut in the 2021 Assembly elections, defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Saayoni Ghosh in a closely contested seat.
Since then, she has emerged as a vocal BJP leader, actively participating in protests and grassroots campaigns. She has also held key organisational roles, including heading the BJP Mahila Morcha in the state.
In recent years, Paul has contested higher-level elections as well, including the Asansol by-poll and the Lok Sabha election from Medinipur, finishing as runner-up to Shatrughan Sinha and June Malia, respectively.
In the 2026 assembly elections, her campaign focused heavily on local issues such as industrial stagnation in the Paschim Bardhaman region and women’s safety. During the campaign, she reported an attack on her convoy in Asansol, calling it a sign of the ruling party’s “electoral desperation."
