Who is BJP’s Nitin Nabin, set to become party’s youngest national president?

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to witness a generational shift in its top organisational leadership with Nitin Nabin all set to take over as the party’s next national president. Currently serving as the BJP’s national working president, Nabin is expected to be the sole candidate for the post and in line with party tradition is likely to be elected unopposed once he filed the nomination.

Once formally elected, 45-year-old Nabin will become the youngest leader to head the BJP, succeeding J P Nadda, who has held the position since January 2020. The election process is expected to begin with the issuance of a notification around January 18 followed by Nabin filing his nomination the next day. He is likely to formally assume office on January 20 as the BJP’s 12th national president.

Nitin Nabin key challenges

The leadership change comes as the ruling party prepares for a major organisational overhaul at the national level ahead of crucial Assembly elections in states such as West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Beyond these immediate political battles, Nabin will also be tasked with steering the party towards the 2029 Lok Sabha elections that will be held amid significant changes such as delimitation and the implementation of a 33 per cent women’s quota in Parliament and state Assemblies.

Nitin Nabin father: Born to a BJP leader

Nabin was born on May 23, 1980 in Ranchi, Jharkhand, to Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, a senior BJP leader and a four-time Member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from Patna West. His mother was Meera Sinha, according to a statement on the BJP website.

Nabin cleared his Class X examination in 1996 from the CBSE-affiliated St. Michael’s High School, Patna. His educational journey took him next to CSKM Public School, New Delhi, where he completed his Intermediate examination in 1998.

Nitin Nabin news: Nabin’s political background

Nitin Nabin is a five-time Member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly representing the Bankipur constituency. He entered electoral politics in 2006, winning a by-election from Patna West. Following constituency delimitation, he shifted to Bankipur and has since retained the seat in the 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2025 Assembly elections.

In the 2025 polls, Nabin secured a decisive victory, polling 98,299 votes and defeating Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate Rekha Kumari by a margin of over 51000 votes underlining his strong grassroots connect in the constituency.

Nitin Nabin held key portfolios in Bihar govt

Nabin has held several key portfolios in the Nitish Kumar–led Bihar government. He served as Minister of Road Construction from February 2021 to August 2022 and returned to the same portfolio from February 2025 until December 2025. Between March 2024 and February 2025, he handled the Urban Development and Housing department along with the Law and Justice ministry.

His ministerial tenure focused on infrastructure development, urban housing initiatives and welfare measures, including schemes supporting journalists and incentives for ASHA and Mamta workers.

His roots in the BJP

A product of the BJP’s youth wing, Nabin has played a significant role in the party’s organisational structure. He previously served as the National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and as BJYM’s Bihar state president. During this phase, he was actively involved in youth mobilisation campaigns, including the National Unity Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir and a march from Guwahati to Tawang honouring martyrs of the 1965 war.

He has also held organisational responsibilities as the BJP’s in-charge for Sikkim and co-in-charge for Chhattisgarh contributing to election management and party expansion in those states.

In December 2025, the BJP parliamentary board appointed him as the party’s national working president, widely seen as a stepping stone to the top organisational post.
