Who Is Nandita Gorlosa?
Former state minister Nandita Gorlosa has represented the Haflong (ST) constituency in the state assembly. She was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Haflong in 2021 on a BJP ticket.
Following her victory, she was inducted into the Assam cabinet and handled portfolios such as mines and minerals and tribal faith and culture.
Born on May 13, 1977, Gorlosa is from Haflong in Assam’s Dima Hasao hill district. Over the years, she has emerged as a prominent political figure in the region, building a strong support base among tribal communities in the constituency.
Nandita Gorlosa Joins Congress
Gorlosa quit the BJP after the party denied her a ticket for the upcoming Assembly elections. As part of a broader strategy to counter anti-incumbency, the BJP dropped several sitting MLAs and fielded newcomer Rupali Langthasa from the Haflong seat.
Her switch came just a day before the nomination deadline and prompted the Congress to reshuffle its candidate list, with the party deciding to field her from the Haflong constituency.
The development is being viewed as a major political shift in Assam’s hill district of Dima Hasao. Soon after leaving the BJP, Gorlosa joined the Congress and is now set to contest from the same constituency on the party’s ticket.
Her induction led the Congress to reconsider its earlier nominee, with party leaders indicating that her presence could boost their chances in the key tribal constituency.
