Urban expansion in Bengaluru has often moved faster than its road network, leaving several growing neighbourhoods struggling with poor connectivity and long travel times. Over the past few years, infrastructure projects have tried to catch up, especially in the city’s western corridors where layouts have expanded rapidly. One such long-awaited road project is now nearing completion, promising to change how people move between key stretches.

The Major Arterial Road, stretching about 11 km, is being developed as a 10-lane corridor connecting Magadi Road to the Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway. Passing through the Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout, the road is designed to serve as a high-capacity urban link for both local and long-distance traffic.

The new road includes 6 main carriageway lanes and 4 service lanes, along with cycle tracks and pedestrian-friendly footpaths. This makes it one of the more structured road projects in recent years, built to handle both fast-moving vehicles and local access needs.

Why This Route Matters for Commuters

For residents in west Bengaluru, especially those in and around the Kempegowda Layout, commuting has often meant navigating narrow internal roads or depending on already congested main roads. This new arterial stretch is expected to offer a direct alternative, reducing dependency on existing bottlenecks.

The road is likely to ease pressure on Magadi Road and Mysuru Road stretches, particularly during peak hours. It also creates a smoother connection to the Mysuru Expressway, which is increasingly being used for both intercity travel and logistics movement.

Key Engineering Challenges Addressed

A significant hurdle in the project was the construction of a railway underbridge near Challaghatta. This section required work under an active railway line, making it one of the more complex components of the project. With this now completed, a major connectivity gap has been resolved.

Additionally, a vehicular overpass in the same zone is being developed to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow across intersecting routes.

What Changes Once It Opens

Once operational, the road is expected to cut travel time between Magadi Road and the expressway, especially for those commuting daily across west Bengaluru. It will also improve internal access within the Kempegowda Layout, making movement between sectors faster and more predictable.

From a broader perspective, the road could support future infrastructure integration, including connections to upcoming ring road projects. For now, its immediate impact will be felt by daily commuters looking for a more reliable and less congested route out of the city’s western stretches.
