The resignation of former Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah triggered a major political storm in the state, with Borah naming senior party MP Rakibul Hussain as a key factor behind his exit ahead of the assembly elections. Borah alleged that Rakibul Hussain wields considerable influence over the party’s functioning in Assam and claimed that state Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi was operating merely as a “figurehead".

Responding to the developments, Rakibul Hussain said he had made efforts to dissuade Borah from leaving the party. He remarked that if someone has already made up their mind to quit, persuasion alone cannot change that decision.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that Bhupen Borah will join the BJP on February 22. Himanta Sarma said Borah, who served as state Congress president from 2021 to 2025, had struggled within the Congress party for a long time and would now have a platform in the BJP to pursue his political goals.

Who Is Rakibul Hussain?

Rakibul Hussain is currently a Member of Parliament from Dhubri, a seat he won in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections by defeating AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal by more than 10 lakh votes. The margin was among the highest in the country and brought an end to Ajmal’s three consecutive terms from the constituency. His decisive victory significantly strengthened his position within the Congress and reinforced his stature as a key political figure in Assam.

Rakibul Hussain previously served as an MLA from Samaguri in Nagaon district for 23 years, from 2001 to 2024, securing five consecutive electoral victories. He was also a senior cabinet minister in the government led by former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, handling key portfolios such as forest, environment, rural development and tourism. He later served as Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly before being elected to Parliament.

Rakibul Hussain is widely regarded as one of the Congress party’s most influential leaders in Assam, particularly in minority-dominated constituencies. His political weight is seen as critical to the party’s strategy and prospects in the upcoming assembly elections.
