Who is Santhy Balachandran? The creative force behind 'Lokah'—"Santhy is not just a writer"

Directed by Dominic Arun, 'Lokah: Chapter 1 - Chandra,' starring Kalyani Priyadarshan and Naslen, was released on August 28. The film, which grossed Rs. 24 crore in India alone and crossed Rs. 60 crore worldwide, was praised for its storyline, acting, and special appearances.

However, the biggest role on the screenplay side was played by actress and writer Santhy Balachandran. Her creativity is widely praised as the lifeblood of 'Lokah.'

Santhy Balachandran's career has been a journey of bold choices and growth

Santhy Balachandran first acted in the 2017 film 'Tharangam,' directed by Dominic Arun, opposite Tovino Thomas. Later, she gained attention as the only female lead in Lijo Jose Pellissery's 'Jallikattu' (2019). She also made her Hindi cinema debut with 'Gulmohar' in 2023. But her contribution as a screenwriter through 'Lokah' has been a major turning point in his artistic journey.

Even Kalyani Priyadarshan has praised her, saying, “Santhy is not just a writer; she is the biggest creative force in this film.”

Santhy Balachandran embraced cinema wholeheartedly

Santhy, who studied at Hyderabad Central University and began studying anthropology at Oxford University in 2011, left behind a secure academic life and chose the world of art for cinema. It was not an easy decision. She thanked her parents and wrote, “The joy they experience with my success is the greatest gift I received on my journey.

The joy they receive today is more important than the worries I have given them," she said emotionally.

Santhy Balachandran paved the way for her screenwriting breakthrough

Prior to 'Lokah,' Santhy Balachandran worked as an assistant director and writer on the 2021 music video for 'Oblivion,' alongside Dominic Arun. Her new film, 'Sambhava Vivaranam Naalara Sangham,' is set to release soon. Her journey of balancing writing and acting has become a role model for younger artists.
