Fake Signature Case: Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was questioned by the West Bengal CID for over five hours in connection with the alleged signature mismatch case linked to a key resolution submitted in the state Assembly.

The Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha MP was questioned for nearly five and a half hours at the CID headquarters in Kolkata on Thursday. According to CID sources, investigators were not satisfied with several of his responses and identified multiple inconsistencies during the interrogation.

The focus of the questioning was the meeting resolution book which investigators say remains untraceable despite searches at the party’s central office and its Camac Street office. According to CID sources, Banerjee didn’t provide a satifactory answer and sidestepped questions related to the resolution book involving party MLAs, leading to further scrutiny.

Investigators also questioned him about the meeting in which several decisions, including the selection of the Leader of the Opposition, were reportedly taken. According to CID sources, questions were raised over which MLAs were present at the meeting, whether absent legislators had authorised others to sign on their behalf, and when those signatures were made.

The agency is also seeking clarity on whether MLAs who did not attend the meeting had informed party leaders in advance and whether any separate discussions were held with them later. CID sources said tha the responses on these issues were not considered satisfactory.

Following Thursday’s questioning, Banerjee left Bhabani Bhavan and later visited party supremo Mamata Banerjee’s residence. The CID has directed him to appear again at noon on June 14.

What’s The Case?

The case relates to allegations that signatures of some Trinamool Congress MLAs on an Assembly resolution did not match their original signatures. The resolution was linked to appointments to key Assembly positions, including those reserved for the Opposition.

The CID launched its probe after discrepancies were reportedly detected in the signatures submitted with the resolution. Investigators have since collected handwriting samples from several legislators, with preliminary findings reportedly indicating mismatches in some cases.

Banerjee appeared before the CID after the Calcutta High Court directed him to cooperate with the investigation. He had earlier sought additional time and skipped previous summonses, citing health concerns and prior commitments.
