New Delhi: This Reddit post by a tech worker who’s switched jobs after being laid off has ignited a large online conversation. The worker claimed he took a job at an Indian company with a salary hike of 25%, believing that he would be able to have a new start after being fired by a multinational company (MNC). But within the new company, he or she soon found himself regretting the change as a result of the working environment and company culture.

The employee had previously worked for an MNC that had an open, friendly and flexible office culture, according to the viral post. Workers would regularly communicate with one another, teams would communicate outside of work activities and there were more employee-friendly policies in place. The employee was laid off work and then got an employment offer from an old traditional Indian company which offered him better remuneration. The person took up the position easily after observing the tough competition in the job market.

However, their life at the new business was far from their dreams. The worker said that there was little communication between employees except in relation to work. The worker reported a calm and detached atmosphere, with workers being mostly “on their own jobs” during the day. Very little casual talk or team bonding occurred in the workplace as in the past.

The employee also said that there were also less flexibility and strict work policies. The environment of the work place was more stressful, workers were expected to be very disciplined at all times, according to the post. The Reddit user commented that they had become accustomed to a different MNC environment where they had a good work-life balance and a good culture and that this was something that they had started to miss out on in their previous job.

A lot of social media people chimed in on the post in no time. There were others who were very supportive of the employee’s comments, and said they felt the same way at old fashioned Indian businesses. Several respondents pointed out that the pressures of competition, and the lack of comfort among employees remain to be a problem in a number of companies in India and that such old working environments are still followed. Others stated that teams don’t communicate well and are less accepting in the workplace.

Meanwhile, others users didn’t share the same views. They said that each company has its own work culture and employees cannot expect every workplace to be the same. Others commented that during tough times, wage and job security can outweigh office amenities and social interaction. It is said that “adapting to the new environment is a part of professional life.”

The topic has once again jumped into the viral debate on the issue of culture in the corporate work place in India. In the last few years, a growing number of staff, especially at international firms, have been considering their work-life balance, flex working, their mental health and the great atmosphere in the office. Meanwhile, a few old-fashioned companies still maintain the work ethic of discipline and long hours, and stress the strict hierarchy of offices.

The importance of job satisfaction to workplace culture is currently believed to be a critical factor in job satisfaction, particularly by younger workers. The most obvious criteria for job change is salary, but many are also watching how companies treat their employees and support their general happiness.

Although the Reddit post might be from one person, there’s enough of an online reaction that many professionals are taking it seriously, which is a sign that they are taking steps to think about what type of workplace they would like to have in the future.
