Many kitchen ingredients are part of home remedies for hair and skin issues, including pigmentation. In a similar vein, face yoga expert Mansi Gulati recently shared how an imli or tamarind mask helps with skin pigmentation. “Vitamin D deficiency causes skin pigmentation. Try imli mask,” Gulati claimed on Instagram.
How to prepare the mask?
*Soak tamarind for 30 minutes.
*Apply it as a mask.
*Use leftover water as a toner.
One user commented, “Ma’am, r u sure about it?” So, we also decided to ask experts.
Is it effective?
Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, Mumbai said she is “skeptical” about its usage. “Tamarind is known for adding tangy flavour in Indian cuisine but using it on the face is not recommended. Not everything edible should be applied to the face. Your face or skin is quite sensitive and you should always be cautious about what you are applying on it. There’s no scientific research proving the effectiveness of applying imli mask on your face. It does more harm than good,” said Dr Kapoor.
According to Dr Kapoor, if a tamarind mask is applied on the face too often, it can easily irritate the skin.
“One can experience side effects like skin irritation, redness, itchiness, dryness, and increased skin sensitivity. People who are allergic to tamarind may experience reactions or skin rashes after use. Extensively using an imli face mask can over-exfoliate your skin while stripping out its natural oil making it look dull, dry, rough, and flaky,” said Dr Kapoor.

Your adult acne may get “triggered” due to this mask resulting in acne flare-ups.
“One should strictly avoid applying this mask as tamarind can be harsh on the skin. Always conduct a patch test of new products like face masks, serums, lotions, or sunscreens on your elbow to look for potential side effects. Immediately discontinue using in case of severe allergic reaction. Consult a dermatologist to effectively weigh the consequences and potential benefits of using a tamarind face mask. Do not blindly follow or believe everything you see online,” asserted Dr Kapoor.
