Why India's most famous village turns away Sunday visitors

Tourism completely changed the fortunes of Mawlynnong. But after decades of playing host to the world, the locals decided that at least one day a week should belong entirely to them. The Saturday RushEvery Saturday, as many as 1,000 tourists pour into this tiny village of just 600 residents, tucked away in India’s far northeast. Visitors come to stroll down lanes framed by vibrant flowers, snap selfies on impeccably clean streets, and see firsthand if the town truly lives up to the title that made it famous nationwide: Asia's cleanest village.Closed on SundaysSince January 2026 the big black metal gates that block the only road into Mawlynnong have been locked and guarded every week.
