New Delhi: Recently, actor Ranveer Singh has been in the middle of a big row as it was reported that he was “banned” from Bollywood. The story soon had people talking about it in social media and entertainment websites, but they were left in a dilemma regarding what really went on.
But things aren’t quite as it’s been reported on several news releases. The unrest has been caused by a dispute connected to a reported fallout with Don 3 over its lack of transformative power, ending the main actor’s (RID) run of action, runner-up and stuntman roles. RID’s quest for transformative power has created serious unrests in the film industry, however, and was the cause behind a supposed dispute between him and Don 3.
What pushed the controversy?
It started reportedly when Ranveer Singh walked away from highly anticipated film ‘Don 3’ helmed by Farhan Akhtar. Don was played by Shah Rukh Khan, and Ranveer was announced as the new Don in the franchise in 2023. The movie was said to be in a high-level stage of development. Script writing, location scouting, promotion shoots, etc. had reportedly been completed prior to production. Sources stated that the makers already can be said to have already invested a lot of finances into the project.
It went sour when reports of its effect indicated that Ranveer was planning to drop out of the film just ahead of the shooting date. This resulted in economic losses for the producers, and had an impact on numerous laborers involved in the film.
What is FWICE and why did it take action?
Later, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), one of the largest film workers’ unions in India, joined the issue. The Body is made up of thousands of technicians, make-up artists, spot boys, junior artists and other entertainment industry workers.
A complaint related to the Don 3 issue prompted FWICE to reportedly send a “non-cooperation directive” to Ranveer Singh. The organization was reported to have said it felt that the sudden departure had hurt their workers, whose jobs had been tied to the movie’s schedule. The organization also claimed he failed to reply to several correspondence it sent to Ranveer about the incident. News of the action prompted numerous media reports that the action was a “ban”, causing a lot of confusion online.
Later, FWICE clarified that print bans of Bollywood are not total nor legal bans. The organization says that it is only a “non-cooperation directive”. It would imply that the members linked to FWICE might not take part in projects which involve Ranveer Singh till it’s sorted out. But industry professionals believe the organization is not legally able to prevent an actor from making so-called Bollywood movies. This does not mean just yet, though, as FWICE is made up of many workers and techs, and such action could still cause issues when producing films. After all, it’s the reason it has become serious even though there isn’t any formal legal ban.
Ranveer Singh has not been involved in the brouhaha. But his spokesman has said that the actor values the film industry and would like to deal professionally with its routine, part of which is respect. It was also reported that the team at the helm of Ranveer asked what powers was the organisation in order to take such action against him.
The actor has not directly commented on this issue extensively so far. Amid the controversy, several people from the film industry came out in support of Ranveer Singh. Actor Manoj Bajpayee, who used his social media to come to the party, hopes the problem will be resolved soon. Director Sanjay Gupta also angered the man with the action and indicated that thousands of workers may be at stake if film work gets stalled due to such a problem. Whereas Ranveer Singh fans have rallied to the Bengal Tiger’s side, with many fans questioning how creative and professional differences are not a normal occurrence in cinema.
What Happens Next?
No word yet on resolution of the dispute. Quite possibly, industry sources feel both would want to resolve the issue in the privacy of their homes, given the fact that Don 3 is a huge undertaking, and Ranveer Singh will still be one of the top punneaux in Bollywood. Despite the controversies since now created negative headlines, experts feel it is too early to conclude if it will seriously impact the career of Ranveer Singh. So, for now, the actor remains in the spotlight and is awaiting clarification on amongst others the Don 3 situation and the projects that are next in line.
