Initial complaints emerged from Rajasthan and Bihar, where investigators reportedly began probing circulation of NEET exam-related material through WhatsApp.

Mental Trauma, Fury Takes Over Social Media As NTA Cancels NEET After Paper Leak
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination that was held on May 3 and announced that a fresh test will be conducted after allegations of a large-scale paper leak triggered outrage across the country. The decision comes after days of mounting pressure from students, parents, coaching institutes, opposition parties, and law enforcement agencies investigating possible irregularities linked to the medical entrance exam.
The cancellation has thrown the future of lakhs of medical aspirants into uncertainty and once again raised serious concerns about the credibility of India’s examination system. For many students, the move brought mixed emotions, relief that alleged malpractice would not go unchecked, but also frustration at having to restart preparation for one of the country’s most competitive exams.
All About The NEET Paper Leak That Triggered A Row
The controversy began shortly after the NEET-UG 2026 examination was conducted, when reports from several states suggested that question papers may have been leaked before the exam.
Initial complaints emerged from Rajasthan and Bihar, where investigators reportedly began probing suspicious circulation of exam-related material through messaging platforms and private groups. Students and coaching institutes also started flagging unusually accurate “prediction sheets" that appeared to match a significant portion of the actual question paper.
As more details surfaced, allegations grew that some candidates had received access to questions hours before the examination. Investigators are now examining claims that answer keys and paper sets were circulated through organised networks operating across multiple states. Rajasthan Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG) launched a detailed investigation.
The probe revealed links between the suspicious paper and both Kerala and the Sikar district of Rajasthan. It is alleged that an MBBS student in Kerala, originally from Churu, Rajasthan, sent a ‘question bank’ via WhatsApp on May 1 to his friend in Sikar, who runs a paying guest accommodation. According to sources, the question bank contained around 300 questions. When these were compared with the original NEET paper, officials were reportedly stunned: about 150 of the 180 questions matched exactly with those asked in the exam.
After receiving the paper, the Sikar-based PG operator allegedly forwarded it through WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms. He shared the material with students staying at his PG, from where it spread further through career counsellors and other students. Surprisingly, after the exam, the same PG operator lodged a complaint with the Udyog Nagar police station and the NTA. SOG is now investigating whether he posed as a complainant out of fear of being exposed.
According to news agency ANI, Rajasthan SOG Additional Director General Vishal Bansal had said investigators were examining a guess paper containing approximately 410 questions, out of which around 120 questions allegedly appeared in the Chemistry section of the NEET-UG 2026 examination. Bansal added the paper had reportedly been circulating among students for between 15 days and one month before the examination.
Reports say the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is set to takeover probe into the paper leak.
The situation escalated rapidly on social media, where hashtags demanding cancellation of NEET began trending. Students alleged that allowing the examination results to stand would unfairly disadvantage lakhs of honest candidates.
Why Did NTA Decide To Cancel The Exam?
Initially, there was uncertainty over whether authorities would order a full cancellation or limit action to specific centres where irregularities were suspected. However, as the scale of the allegations became clearer, pressure on the NTA intensified.
The government eventually concluded that continuing with the examination process risked severely damaging the credibility of the entire system. Once allegations emerged that leaked material closely matched a substantial number of questions in the actual paper, authorities appeared to believe that the integrity of the exam could no longer be guaranteed.
The decision to conduct a re-exam is being seen as an attempt to restore confidence among students and avoid prolonged legal and political battles over the legitimacy of the results.
What Happens Next?
The immediate focus will now shift to the re-examination schedule. The NTA is expected to announce fresh dates soon, but the cancellation is likely to delay the medical admission calendar this year.
Counselling processes, college admissions, and the beginning of academic sessions may all be pushed back depending on how quickly the re-exam is conducted and results are processed.
Meanwhile, investigating agencies are expected to widen their probe into possible leak networks. There could also be arrests, forensic analysis of digital evidence, and scrutiny of individuals linked to exam logistics.
The issue is also likely to reach courts, especially if students challenge either the cancellation or the conduct of the re-examination.
