Why was tennis star Marketa Vondrousova handed a four-year doping ban? Tribunal’s ruling raises questions (Image via Getty)
Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has been banned from tennis for four years after refusing to take an anti-doping test at her home in December 2025. The decision was announced by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) following a ruling from an independent tribunal.Vondrousova, who won Wimbledon in 2023, argued that she refused the test because she feared for her safety and suffered what she described as an “acute stress reaction.” At the time, she said she had been dealing with months of physical and mental pressure and reacted out of fear when someone arrived at her home late at night. However, the ITIA said the doping control officer properly identified herself and followed the required procedures.
The agency also stated that Vondrousova signed a document confirming that she had refused the test. After reviewing the case, the tribunal imposed the maximum four-year suspension. The ruling is significant because anti-doping authorities treat a refusal to take a test in the same way as a positive test result. According to the ITIA, this approach is necessary to prevent athletes from avoiding sanctions simply by refusing to be tested.
The decision leaves Vondrousova facing a lengthy absence from the sport during what would normally be some of the most important years of her career.Marketa Vondrousova doping ban and ITIA ruling
