Tamil Nadu has scripted history with an almost 85 per cent voter turnout, the highest ever for the state, in the Assembly Elections 2026. As voting took place on Thursday, April 23, voters came out in huge numbers to cast their vote. Women voters, especially, have cast their vote in large numbers. The election saw an 85.76 per cent women voter turnout.

The last time Tamil Nadu witnessed a high voter turnout, it saw a regime change. Whether that happens this election as well is something that remains to be seen. Meanwhile, poll pundits are also looking at the possibility of the third front rising in the southern state with actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) having entered the fray. But have third parties been able to manage a spectacle in past elections that saw a high voter turnout? What have high voter turnouts looked like in Tamil Nadu historically. Here’s diving deep into the Tamil Nadu voter turnout history.

What Has Been The Turnout In The Past 10 Tamil Nadu Polls?

Tamil Nadu has consistently seen a voter turnout of over 70 per cent since the 2006 elections. Here’s a look at the voter percentage of the past 10 Tamil Nadu polls:

  • 2026 – 84.69%
  • 2021 – 73.63%
  • 2016 – 74.81%
  • 2011 – 78.29%
  • 2006 – 70.82%
  • 2001 – 59.07%
  • 1996 – 66.95%
  • 1991 – 63.84%
  • 1989 – 69.69%

What Was The Tamil Nadu Election Result When The State Saw High Voting?

2011 Election (78.29 per cent Turnout)

This record turnout before 2026 reflected intense public anger over DMK’s governance issues like power shortages, inflation, and the 2G scam. It delivered a landslide victory for Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK, ousting DMK after five years in power.

2016 Election (74.81 per cent Turnout)

While the voter turnout dipped slightly from 2011, it remained high amid cash-for-votes controversies. AIADMK under Jayalalithaa bucked anti-incumbency to win re-election, a first since 1984, securing a simple majority despite welfare scheme criticisms.

2021 Election (73.63 per cent Turnout)

Held during COVID-19, the turnout showed resilient participation despite challenges. The DMK capitalised on AIADMK’s pandemic handling and Jayalalithaa’s death, sweeping back to power after a decade.

What High Turnouts In The Past Meant For Tamil Nadu?

Decisive Mandates

Some of Tamil Nadu’s highest turnouts have gone hand-in-hand with sweeping victories. Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK witnessed a landslide win in 2011, which saw a turnout of over 78 per cent.

A similar result was seen in 1996 when the turnout tou67 per cent. This election saw M Karunanidhi’s rout of AIADMK as the DMK-led alliance won overwhelmingly.

Women Voters = Game Changers

A major driver of high turnout in recent elections has been the woman voter. Women’s participation has surged and often exceeds men’s turnout. This has strengthened welfare-based voting and has even helped incumbents at times. But wome votes have also enabled silent swings.

This election too, women votes have risen to 85.76 per cent. Women were the central battleground during campaigns, arguably more than any previous election in the state. All major parties built their manifestos around direct cash support, welfare benefits, and household relief targeted at women voters.

No Huge Impact On Third Forces

Despite spikes in turnout, Tamil Nadu has largely remained a two-pole contest: DMK vs AIADMK alliances. Even when turnout was high, smaller parties rarely converted that into major breakthroughs and votes tended to consolidate around the main alliances.

This election, Vijay’s TVK emerged as the third force. Whether Vijay manages to turn this history is something that remains to be seen.

Historically, a surge in turnout in Tamil Nadu signals an election that voters care deeply about, and more often than not, it has preceded decisive outcomes rather than close contests.
