Real Madrid CF say they have handed over “all available evidence" to UEFA as the governing body investigates alleged racist abuse directed at Vinícius Júnior.
The Brazilian forward reported the incident during Tuesday’s Champions League knockout play-off clash in Lisbon against SL Benfica.
Vinicius told referee Francois Letexier he had been called “mono", the Spanish word for monkey, after celebrating in front of home supporters. He had already been booked for that celebration.
Real Madrid identified the alleged offender as Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni.
UEFA confirmed on Wednesday that a disciplinary investigation had been opened. Real responded swiftly.
“Real Madrid CF announces that it has today provided UEFA with all available evidence regarding the incidents that occurred… in Lisbon against SL Benfica," the club said in a statement.
“Our club has actively co-operated with the investigation opened by UEFA following the unacceptable episodes of racism experienced during that match."
The match was paused for around 10 minutes in line with UEFA’s anti-racism protocol before play resumed. Vinícius completed the game.
For the 23-year-old, it marks yet another chapter in a troubling pattern. He has faced repeated racist abuse in Spain, including incidents at Valencia and cases involving fans of Atletico Madrid that led to convictions.
“Real Madrid will continue working… to eradicate racism, violence and hatred in sport and in society," the club added.
UEFA’s investigation is ongoing.
