Karnataka CM News: Speculation over a major political transition in Karnataka intensified on Wednesday amid a flurry of unexpected developments within the ruling Congress. All eyes are now focused on a crucial breakfast meeting convened by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday, where he is expected to brief ministers and senior party leaders on his next course of action.
The buzz around a possible leadership change gathered momentum after both Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar went to New Delhi to meet with the Congress high command on Tuesday. According to sources, Siddaramaiah may submit his resignation to the Governor on Thursday afternoon, potentially paving the way for Shivakumar to take over and form the new government.
News18 had earlier reported, through sources, that Siddaramaiah will move to Rajya Sabha as the party promised him a national role in the run-up to the 2029 Lok Sabha election.
However, the Congress party has so far made no official announcement regarding any leadership transition. All claims surrounding the much-discussed power shift remain based on sources and political speculation.
Here are the top updates on the developing political situation in Karnataka:
Surjewala Holds Marathon Meeting with CM: AICC Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala met Siddaramaiah at the latter’s official residence in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The one-on-one meeting lasted for nearly an hour.
DK Shivakumar’s Delhi Huddle: Before leaving for Bengaluru, Shivakumar met with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Crucial Thursday Breakfast Meeting: Siddaramaiah has called for a high-profile breakfast meeting at his official residence, ‘Kaveri’, on Thursday at 9 AM. All state cabinet ministers and party MLAs, including Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, are expected to attend.
Resignation Rumours Peak: Congress Chief Whip Ashok Pattan said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah might tender his resignation to the Governor on Thursday afternoon. “I think that the Chief Minister might resign after 3:00 PM Thursday. We have not been formally intimated about a CLP (Congress Legislature Party) meeting yet, but all these developments have happened quite unexpectedly," Pattan said.
Rahul Gandhi’s Cabinet Wish List: Sources indicate that Rahul Gandhi has conveyed a specific blueprint for the impending administrative overhaul. The high command wants a strong focus on merit, youth, and new faces, ensuring robust representation for all castes, Dalits, and OBCs. Sources said that the party high command is in favour of removing underperforming ministers from their posts.
High Command Decision Is Final: State Minister Priyank Kharge reinforced that the central leadership has already made its decision and clearly communicated the next steps to both the CM and Deputy CM. “High command will decide. Surjewala ji is here, and whatever he says is what the High Command intends. It does not matter what anybody else has to say," Kharge stated.
CM’s Legal Advisor Confirms Imminent Changes: The Chief Minister’s legal advisor, AS Ponnanna, acknowledged the shift, stating, “There are some changes on the cards. We cannot deny it or shut our eyes to that. But as to what exactly transpires and the true nature of the change, we will have to wait and watch."
Surjewala Appeals for Calm: Amid growing frenzy and local celebrations by party workers, Randeep Surjewala explicitly requested the media and public not to speculate on the leadership issue. “I fold my hands and request everyone… please do not speculate. I want to assure the people of Karnataka that any decision taken will be in the best interest of the state and fair to the individuals involved. Currently, no formal CLP meeting has been called," Surjewala said.
All Eyes on Thursday Morning: Reinforcing the high tension, Karnataka Minister Satish Jarkiholi noted that the path forward will only become entirely clear once the state leaders emerge from the CM’s residence. “We will have to wait for the breakfast meeting on Thursday to know everything," Jarkiholi said.
