Team USA defeated Great Britain 9–1 in the World Baseball Classic, but the biggest talking point after the game was not the score. Many fans were focused on pitcher Tarik Skubal and whether he will pitch again in the tournament.
Skubal made his first start for Team USA, but the outing lasted only three innings, which quickly raised questions about his availability for the rest of the event.Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch addressed the situation soon after the game. He made it clear that the Tigers are thinking about the long MLB season ahead and want their ace back safely. Hinch did not leave much room for confusion when he spoke about Skubal’s return to Detroit camp.
He said, “I’m fully expecting Tarik to be back in Tigers camp.”
A.J. Hinch explains Tarik Skubal’s limited World Baseball Classic outing and uncertainty about a second start
Tarik Skubal joined Team USA’s World Baseball Classic roster with strict limits on how he could be used. The Detroit Tigers and the Team USA coaching staff had already agreed that his workload would be controlled during the tournament. That plan was clear during the game against Great Britain. The start began with an early shock. On the very first pitch of the game, Great Britain’s Nate Eaton hit a home run.
It was a rough opening moment for Skubal. But the left-handed pitcher quickly recovered. After that first swing, Skubal settled down and showed his quality on the mound. He did not allow another run and struck out five hitters during his three innings. Even though the outing looked short, it was actually planned that way.In the World Baseball Classic group stage, pitchers are usually allowed to throw up to 65 pitches.
However, Skubal reportedly had a lower cap of around 55 pitches as part of his preparation for the upcoming MLB season.Team USA manager Mark DeRosa followed that plan carefully. Because of that limit, Skubal’s appearance ended after three innings. Many reports suggested that this outing might be his only start in the tournament.Still, the question came up again after the game. During the FOX broadcast, reporter Ken Rosenthal asked Skubal directly if he would be willing to pitch again later in the tournament.Skubal chose his words carefully. He said, “That’s a tough question right now. I probably won’t answer that one right now.” His response did not confirm another start, but it also did not completely close the door. There is also a bigger situation surrounding his future in Detroit. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Tigers are not expected to discuss a contract offer with Skubal until after the season. Nightengale reported, “There is no offer, and there won’t be an offer until the end of the season.”For now, Team USA moves forward in the tournament after its comfortable win. But for the Detroit Tigers, the focus is simple. They want their Cy Young-winning pitcher healthy and ready when the MLB season begins.
