A woman lost her life after being trapped under debris for nearly two and a half hours following the collapse of a bathroom at Kottayam Medical College. The woman had come to the hospital to seek treatment for her daughter when the incident occurred.

The portion that collapsed was located behind wards 14 and 11 of the hospital. Authorities stated that this part of the building was not in use. Two other individuals sustained injuries in the incident. Police and fire force personnel reached the site and carried out search and rescue operations.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan visited Kottayam Medical College and assessed the situation on the ground.

Following the incident, the opposition has demanded the resignation of Health Minister Veena George. Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan criticised the minister, stating that she visited the medical college immediately after the incident and declared the collapsed area as closed and unoccupied. He alleged that this statement led to a delay in rescue efforts and held the minister accountable for the lapse, demanding her resignation.

Congress MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has demanded a judicial probe into the Kottayam Medical College building collapse incident.

Meanwhile, the government has ordered an investigation into the matter, appointing Kottayam District Collector John V Samuel to lead the inquiry.
