The decomposed body of a 24-year-old woman, who was reported missing from Faridabad two months ago, was recovered from a 10-feet-deep pit outside her marital home in Palla’s Roshan Nagar on Friday.
The body, which had to be exhumed using an excavator, was identified as that of Tanu Rajput. She had been married for just under two years to Arun, a resident of Roshan Nagar in Faridabad.
According to the police, Tanu, originally from Khera village in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad, was allegedly killed by her in-laws, and they concealed the crime by claiming she had eloped. As per several media reports, four members of Tanu’s in-laws’ family – her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and another close relative – are in custody.
The body of Tanu was recovered, buried under a freshly laid concrete section of a public lane adjacent to the house where Tanu had lived with her husband and his family. Neighbours said that the area had been dug up around two months ago for the construction of a drain for wastewater.
The decomposed body, identified by family members through clothing, underwent an autopsy at Badshah Khan Civil Hospital on Friday. The medical board is expected to release the report by next week.
Tanu was reported missing on April 25, when her husband filed a complaint at Palla police station, claiming that she was intellectually challenged. Later, the investigators found that the claim was an elaborate cover-up for murder.
Suspicions were raised when Rajput’s family in UP questioned her husband’s claim that she had eloped with someone, instead accusing him and his family of foul play. The police investigation had hit a dead end, with no leads found despite multiple efforts.
Police brought Arun Singh’s father, 50-year-old Bhoop Singh, in for questioning at the station on Friday after visiting the family’s residence. During sustained interrogation, Bhoop allegedly admitted to murdering Rajput and burying her body in the soak-pit at night to avoid detection.
Tanu’s sister, Preeti, alleged that her sister was subjected to mental and physical harassment after her marriage in 2023. Preeti claimed that Arun and his parents demanded gold jewellery and money soon after the wedding.
“Tanu came back to live with us at our maternal home just months after the wedding because she was not being treated well. She stayed with us for over a year. When we finally sent her back, the torture resumed. They wouldn’t let her speak to us, not even on phone calls," she said.
Preeti also alleged that on April 23, the in-laws told the family that Tanu had run away from home.
According to the residents, Tanu’s father-in-law had dug the pit in April under the claim that there was no proper drainage system for the house. Residents also said they noticed that the pit was quickly covered up, with a cement slab laid over it.
Inspector Satya Parkash, SHO of Palla police station, said that preliminary investigations suggest the motive could be either dowry or an alleged extramarital affair.
“Her family has alleged that she was killed over dowry. They denied that she was intellectually challenged. The investigation is ongoing, and we will soon confirm the exact motive and the timeline of the murder," Parkash said.
Police have converted the missing person case into a murder case, invoking sections 103(1), 3(5), and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the victim’s husband and in-laws. Several family members, including the husband, Arun Singh, are absconding. Bhoop Singh runs a tailoring shop from the ground floor of their residence.
