A 27-year-old woman went missing from Assam's Guwahati before being found unharmed in Meghalaya's Shillong a day later, on Saturday, the police said. She had purportedly shared a distress message with her family before she became untraceable. The woman was eventually recovered after being spotted in a distressed state in Shillong, according to officials.

The local police were subsequently alerted by the person who found her. After receiving information about her whereabouts, the woman's family members departed for Shillong along with a police team to take her home.

She was found in a disoriented state, a senior Meghalaya police official said. The young woman was unable to remember how she reached Shillong, the cop added.

"The woman was found near Hotel Polo Towers and seemed very disoriented. We have informed Guwahati police and a team is going to reach here soon. Meanwhile, the woman has been sent for medical examination, following which she will be taken to the police station for questioning," Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills was quoted as saying by India Today NE.

The woman had gone missing on Friday. Before she became untraceable, she allegedly sent a message in which she indicated to her family that she was in danger. She had reportedly hired a cab from her residence in Guwahati and was en route to another locality in the city when she sent the distress message, according to India Today NE.

A police complaint was lodged by her family after they failed to establish contact with her. The cops in Assam then launched a search operation to trace the woman's movements.

During the course of their investigation, the police were able to trace her last known mobile location to an area near Gauhati University campus, per sources cited by India Today NE.

Her phone later became unreachable. No further communication was received from the woman until she was recovered from Shillong. Officials have said that the circumstances under which she was reported missing are yet to be fully determined.

The young woman worked as a school teacher in Assam until the end of March, news agency PTI reported, citing officials.
