US President Donald Trump issued a warning to Iran, saying the United States could take unspecified actions if a deal is not reached, while adding that he still believes escalation can be avoided.

“If we don’t reach an agreement with Iran, we will do things that won’t bring them happiness, but I don’t think we’ll have to do that," Trump said in an interview with Axios.  Trump did not outline what specific measures he was referring to, but framed the statement as part of a broader effort to push Tehran toward an agreement while maintaining pressure. At the same time, he signalled that he was not necessarily expecting a breakdown in talks, suggesting that a negotiated outcome remained possible.

“I think so far it’s been very responsible," he said of recent developments, adding in the broader discussion that Iran “will never have a nuclear weapon."

The warning came alongside Trump’s repeated claims that his administration has already taken significant steps to weaken Iran’s military capabilities and limit its strategic options. “I wiped out their military," Trump said, while describing US strikes and operations as decisive in limiting Iran’s capacity to escalate.

“I think that there are no limits," he said in the broader interview when reflecting on the use of power in managing such crises, framing US leverage as central to preventing escalation and stabilising markets.
