Real Madrid’s season has taken a brutal turn.
Brazilian forward Rodrygo has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee, ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign — and the 2026 World Cup.
The winger picked up the injury during Madrid’s shock 1-0 home defeat to Getafe CF on March 2.
Having only just returned from nearly a month out with tendinitis, Rodrygo went down after his knee twisted awkwardly near the touchline. Despite visible discomfort, he managed to finish the match before being examined in the dressing room.
Initial fears emerged the following morning after medical tests, with Spanish outlets reporting possible ACL damage. Those fears have now been confirmed. The 25-year-old faces at least six months on the sidelines — a devastating first major injury of his senior career.
The setback leaves Madrid light in attack at a crucial juncture. With Kylian Mbappe also injured, and Franco Mastantuono suspended, Alvaro Arbeloa is left with Vinicius Junior and Gonzalo Garcia as his only available forwards for the upcoming clash against Celta Vigo.
Madrid still have 12 La Liga matches remaining as they attempt to reel in leaders Barcelona, while a heavyweight Champions League Round of 16 tie against Manchester City looms large.
Defensive Worries Add to the Crisis
The injury crisis doesn’t stop there.
David Alaba is reportedly dealing with calf discomfort, while Raul Asencio is also struggling with fitness issues. Should neither recover in time, Madrid could travel to Balaidos with just one senior centre-back available.
For Brazil, the timing is equally painful. The World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19, with Brazil set to open their campaign against Morocco on June 13 at MetLife Stadium.
