The family of former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan has intensified its criticism of the country’s military leadership, accusing Army Chief Asim Munir of being responsible for Khan’s deteriorating health in prison.
In a series of statements and social media posts, Khan’s sisters—Aleema Khan and Noreen Khan Niazi—rejected official medical reports circulating in the media regarding his condition and demanded urgent access to him at Adiala Jail.
Aleema Khan categorically dismissed claims made in recent medical briefings about her brother’s health, stating that the family has no way to independently verify the treatment he has allegedly received in custody. She said their personal physician, Dr Asim Yousuf, had spoken to jail doctors who described the procedures carried out, but emphasised that there was “no way" for the family to confirm the authenticity or adequacy of the medical care provided.
She reiterated the family’s demand that Imran Khan be immediately transferred to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad, where he can be examined by qualified specialists under Dr Asim Yousuf’s supervision and in the presence of family members.
A medical report concerning Khan’s eye condition was recently submitted to the Supreme Court amid growing concern about possible vision loss. However, his family maintains that the reports being cited publicly lack transparency and independent verification.
Noreen Khan Niazi alleged that her brother is suffering from irreversible damage to his right eye as a “direct consequence" of the treatment he has received in prison. She described the situation as “deliberate cruelty," accusing Asim Munir of executing what she called an “evil and conniving master plan" against the former prime minister.
She further claimed that Imran Khan has endured “unimaginable mistreatment" under what she referred to as “Asim Law," holding the army chief directly responsible for his declining health.
In a message addressed to Pakistan’s military leadership, Noreen said, “The nation is wide awake and the world is watching the brutality and inhumane treatment of Imran Khan."
Aleema Khan announced that family members would visit Adiala Jail at 1.30pm, asserting that meeting him is his legal right. She also said the family would hold a press conference outside the jail at 4pm following their meeting, where they plan to address the public and media regarding his health condition.
Imran Khan has been incarcerated since 2023 following multiple convictions and ongoing legal proceedings. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has repeatedly alleged political victimisation and demanded improved prison conditions and medical access for its leader.
