Yogi Govt's Shiv-Themed International Cricket Stadium In Varanasi Nears Completion

Construction of the International Cricket Stadium in Varanasi has reached 92 per cent completion and is expected to be finished by September, according to the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA).

Being developed at an estimated cost of ₹400 crore, the stadium will have a seating capacity of around 30,000 spectators and is being designed with a Shiv-inspired architectural theme that draws from Varanasi’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

According to the state government, the project is expected to strengthen sports infrastructure in eastern Uttar Pradesh and create new opportunities for cricketers from the Purvanchal region while also boosting sports tourism.

One of the stadium’s defining features is its thematic design. The media centre and North Pavilion are being built in the shape of Lord Shiva’s *damru*, while the floodlight towers are inspired by the *trishul*. The entrance has been designed around the *belpatra* motif, and the roof will resemble a crescent moon.

The stadium complex will include an international-standard main ground, a full-sized practice ground and facilities designed to host domestic as well as international cricket matches.

Officials said the venue will feature modern dressing rooms, a pavilion, media and broadcasting infrastructure, parking for around 1,500 vehicles, high-capacity floodlights, advanced security systems, fire safety infrastructure and spectator amenities.

The UPCA said the project is being financed entirely through the association’s own funds at an estimated cost of ₹400 crore.

According to the government, the state facilitated the project by providing land on a long-term lease and expediting administrative approvals required for construction. It also said an electricity substation was set up near the stadium through the Chief Minister’s Rapid Development Fund to ensure timely power supply for the project.

Officials said continuous coordination between the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association, the state government and the Varanasi administration helped keep construction on schedule.

Once operational, the stadium is expected to host national and international cricket matches and provide training facilities for players from Varanasi and other districts of Purvanchal. The government also expects the venue to boost tourism and benefit local businesses linked to hospitality, transport and trade.

UPCA Chief Executive Officer Ankit Chatterjee said 92 per cent of the construction work had been completed and described the project as the result of coordinated efforts between the cricket body, the state government and the district administration.
