Separated by just 3.8 kilometres, these two islands show how time isn’t just about distance, but about how the world has chosen to divide it.

You Can See Russia From America Here But It’s Almost A Day Ahead
We tend to think of countries as being separated by large distances. Oceans, continents, long stretches of land that clearly divide one place from another. It feels natural to assume that if two countries are close, they must share similar experiences of time and space.
But that’s not entirely true.
There’s a place where Russia and the United States are separated by just 3.8 kilometres. On a clear day, you can actually see from one side to the other.
Between them are two small islands in the Bering Strait — Big Diomede and Little Diomede. One belongs to Russia, and the other to the United States. At first, it seems like a simple geographical detail. Two countries, unusually close together.
But that’s only part of the story.
An invisible boundary runs between these islands — the International Date Line. It doesn’t look like anything. There’s no physical marker in the water. But it changes something fundamental.
Because of it, the two islands don’t just belong to different countries. They exist in different days.
One island is nearly a full day ahead of the other, with a time difference of about 21 hours. So while it might be Monday on one island, it’s still Sunday on the other.
At first, this sounds strange. Two places less than 4 kilometres apart, yet separated by almost an entire day. But it’s a real effect of how we’ve organised time across the world.
What makes this so interesting isn’t just the contrast.
It’s what it reveals.
We often think of time as something constant, something that moves the same way everywhere. But in reality, it’s structured. Divided into zones to make global coordination possible. And sometimes, those divisions create situations like this, where distance and experience don’t quite match.
It’s a small detail on the map. But once you notice it, it quietly changes how you think about borders, time, and how the world is arranged
