At a White House state dinner on Tuesday, King Charles III used humour to lighten the atmosphere as he shared the stage with US President Donald Trump, delivering a remark that quickly drew attention during the formal toasts.

The dinner, held during a state visit, featured speeches from both leaders who exchanged lighthearted jokes while also touching on long standing historical ties between the United States, Britain and Europe.

During his address, King Charles referred to earlier comments made by Trump about European allies and defence responsibilities. The US President has often suggested that without American involvement in global security, some European nations might have faced different outcomes after World War II.

Responding with a playful twist, the King said, “You recently commented, Mr President, that if it were not for the United States, European countries would be speaking German. Dare I say that, if it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French."

The remark drew laughter in the room and was widely seen as a light jab rooted in historical rivalry between former colonial powers.

The King’s comment referred to the early history of North America, when British and French forces competed for control of the region long before US independence around 250 years ago. Despite the humorous tone, the exchange highlighted the deep historical connections between the countries.

The evening ended on a cordial note, with both leaders continuing their formal engagements as part of the state visit.
