Youth climbs phone tower after families reject marriage proposal

Bijnor: A 19-year-old man climbed a mobile tower in Khedki village of Bijnor on Friday and threatened to jump from there after his own family and his girlfriend’s parents refused to approve their marriage.Sahib Alam had been in a relationship with a girl from the same area for around a year. She had earlier visited his home and expressed her wish to marry him before being taken back by her family, who later refused the proposal.His father said Sahib had earlier attempted suicide twice but was saved both times. “My son has been in distress; he was persistent on marrying her,” he said.Police, including city kotwal Avneet Mann, reached the spot and spoke to him over phone. Circle officer Abhay Kumar Pandey said, “He climbed the tower due to his insistence on marrying the girl,” adding that after nearly three hours of persuasion, he finally descended.Police has advised the family to closely monitor his well-being and arrange for professional counselling.
