In over 20 days, the Karnataka Prisons and Correctional Services department seized 101 mobile phones in different prisons across the State, according to an official statement.
The officials said that 23 chargers, 84 SIM cards, 16 earphones, ₹64,880 in cash, and 18 sharp objects were seized.
In a big haul at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, officials seized 30 mobile phones during a late-night operation on Thursday, Director General of Police Alok Kumar said.
He praised the team led by Chief Superintendent of Central Prison Anshu Kumar and Jailer Shivakumar for the operation and announced a ₹30,000 reward.
In a post on X, Mr. Kumar said similar seizures were made in other prisons across the State, including Kalaburagi, where 10 mobile phones were recovered, Mangaluru (six), Ballari (four), and Shivamogga (three), in a span of two days. The searches led to the recovery of eight SIM cards, he mentioned.
The seizures follow Mr. Kumar’s inspection of the Bengaluru Central Prison earlier this week, his first since assuming office. He said he was committed to addressing long-standing issues at the prison.
Mr. Kumar revealed that a 15-day deadline has been given to officers to plug gaps in the system. He warned that stringent action would be taken if any violations are detected after this period. He said that there was a need to get to the root of the problem and understand the network through which mobile phones are being smuggled into prisons.
