In a landmark moment for India’s governance model, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the 50th meeting of PRAGATI on December 31, marking a decade of the ICT-enabled platform’s role in reshaping national development. Since its inception, the Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation (PRAGATI) ecosystem has successfully accelerated projects with a cumulative value exceeding Rs 85 lakh crore, effectively dismantling the “culture of delay" that once plagued major infrastructure works.
The 50th Milestone: Reviewing Rs 40,000 Crore in Projects
In this silver jubilee of meetings, the Prime Minister undertook a comprehensive review of five critical infrastructure projects spanning the Road, Railways, Power, Water Resources, and Coal sectors. These projects, distributed across five states, represent a combined investment of over Rs 40,000 crore.
During the session, the Prime Minister highlighted the platform’s success in reviving projects that had remained stalled for decades. Notable examples of long-pending works completed under PRAGATI’s oversight include:
- The Bogibeel Bridge (Assam): First conceived in 1997.
- The Jammu-Srinagar Rail Link: Work on which began as far back as 1995.
- Navi Mumbai International Airport: Conceptualised in 1997.
- Bhilai Steel Plant Modernisation: Approved in 2007.
Institutionalising Cooperative Federalism
Prime Minister Modi lauded PRAGATI as a prime example of cooperative federalism, noting that it has brought nearly 500 Union Secretaries and State Chief Secretaries onto a single platform to resolve 2,958 issues (a 94% resolution rate). He encouraged states to institutionalise similar mechanisms at the level of the Chief Secretary, particularly to drive impact in the social sector.
By bridging the gap between decision-making and execution, PRAGATI remains a cornerstone of the vision for Viksit Bharat @ 2047, ensuring that national priorities are translated into ground-level reality with unprecedented speed.
