In a robust response to illegal sand mining, Bihar's mines department ramped up its efforts in December, launching over 4,500 statewide operations and confiscating 574 vehicles. Aurangabad emerged as the hotspot for these raids, while Patna recorded the highest number of arrests.
Patna: Continuing its crackdown on illegal sand mining, the mines and geology department conducted raids at 4,582 locations across the state in Dec, with Aurangabad district recording the highest number of raids at 331.
During the month, 574 vehicles used in illegal mining and transportation were seized, the department said.As many as 248 FIRs were lodged during the month, while the highest number of arrests, 15, was reported from Patna district.Deputy CM and mines and geology minister Vijay Kumar Sinha has appealed to the public to share confidential information related to illegal sand mining, transportation and storage through the designated helpline numbers so that timely action can be taken against offenders, the department said.The department reiterated that illegal mining and overloading of sand will not be tolerated and said district mining officers have been instructed to respond promptly to complaints regarding illegal activities at sand ghats.It further said instructions have been issued to conduct inquiries into the role of police station in-charges under whose jurisdiction illegal sand mining and sand overloading are reported.
The findings of such inquiries are to be communicated to senior police officials.The department said strict action against illegal sand mining, transportation and storage is necessary to prevent revenue leakage. It added that revenue collection up to Dec last year stood at 102% of the target fixed for the period from April to Dec.
