A 22-year-old woman in Agra’s Uttar Pradesh was held after a video showing her burning the Manusmriti went viral. As per the reports, the woman claimed that the video was shot three years ago. The video went viral on December 26.
The woman, identified as Priyanka Varun, claimed that it is an old video that was reposted on social media. Reportedly, a case was registered against her and, following a court’s order, she was sent to jail.
The video was reposted on Priyanka’s personal social media account. As per the reports, she is a resident of Nagla Fakirchand in the Shahganj area and is the National President of the Bharatiya Mahila Suraksha Sangh.
The video was uploaded with a caption reading, “Best wishes on Manusmriti Dahan (burning)." She also took a screenshot of this Instagram post and shared it on X.
As per the police, Priyanka was arrested on December 30 and was subsequently released on bail.
A First Information Report (FIR) was filed against her under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
