Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday reviewed the ground situation in violence-hit Manipur with state Governor Ajay Bhalla and senior officials.

The Centre had imposed the President’s Rule in Manipur on February 13 after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned on February 9. The state Assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation.

In the meeting, which lasted around two and half hours, Shah discussed the current situation of the state and saw the presentations. Apart from Bhalla, Manipur Government Adviser Kuldiep Singh, Chief Secretary P K Goel and DGP Rajiv Singh were also present in the meeting.

An official said the review meeting is crucial as President’s Rule in Manipur is set to end on February 13 and the Centre is planning to extend it.

Security forces have been conducting search operations in the state since ethnic violence broke out two years ago. More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in clashes between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups.

Last month, the Home Ministry had issued a notification, giving another extension till May 20, 2026, to a Commission of Inquiry to submit its report on the probe into the 2023 Manipur violence.
