In a chilling case that has rocked Andhra Pradesh, a 42-year-old father from Vizianagaram’s Bobbili town was sentenced to five years in prison for sexually assaulting his 11-year-old daughter. The verdict, delivered by the Vizianagaram POCSO Special Court on October 22, brings justice to a horrific crime that unfolded over a year ago, underscoring the persistent menace of child abuse.

The incident took place on July 19, 2024, in Indiramma Colony, Bobbili. Kasa Narasingarao allegedly sexually assaulted his daughter while she was asleep. The girl’s grandmother, who witnessed the alleged assault, interrupted and quickly filed a complaint at Bobbili police station.

The police, led by then-Circle Inspector M. Nageswara Rao, acted promptly, registering a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Narasingarao was arrested and remanded, with the investigation later handed to CI K. Satishkumar, who gathered irrefutable evidence and filed a charge sheet.

After a year of legal proceedings, Judge K. Nagamani delivered the verdict, finding Narasingarao guilty. The court sentenced him to five years in prison and imposed a Rs 2,000 fine, while awarding Rs 50,000 in compensation to the young victim — a small gesture towards healing in a case that has left the community reeling. Vizianagaram’s SP Damodar, while addressing the media, called the crime “heinous" and a betrayal of familial trust, stressing the police’s zero-tolerance stance on crimes against women and children.

This case is not an isolated one. Andhra Pradesh reported more than 1,200 POCSO cases in 2024, with 60% involving family members, per state crime records. The Bobbili incident follows another tragedy in Kakinada, where an elderly man took his life after abusing a minor, reflecting a grim undercurrent in society. SP Damodar urged communities from Vizianagaram to Vijayawada to stay vigilant, report suspicious behaviour, and protect vulnerable children.  He stressed that such “predators" should be given the strictest punishment. He also warned of reinforcing the need for public awareness in a state where child safety remains a pressing concern.

Though justice has been meted out in this case. But India’s data paints a grim picture. According to the NCRB report for 2023, the last available data, there were 29,670 cases of rape registered in the country. Other forms of sexual assault are also tracked by the NCRB were assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty (83,891 cases), sexual exploitation online (4,199 cases), and POCSO (66,232 cases).
