Another one departs from Manchester United.
Real Betis have agreed a €25 million package with the Red Devils for the permanent transfer of Brazilian winger Antony, a deal that includes a 50% sell-on clause for the Premier League side.
As reported by The Athletic, United and Betis had already settled on a fee in principle earlier this summer. Negotiations dragged, however, as both clubs wrestled with the financial implications of Antony’s salary reduction.
A compromise has now been reached, with United confirming they will make no further payments to the player as part of the exit.
Sources suggest the final package is worth €25m (£21.6m), with up to €3m (£2.6m) in potential add-ons. Crucially for United, the deal includes a 50% profit sell-on clause, ensuring they would benefit if Betis were to sell Antony for a higher fee in the future.
From Misfit to Revival in Spain
Antony joined United in August 2022, reuniting with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag in a blockbuster transfer worth €95m (£81.3m) plus €5m in add-ons: one of the most expensive signings in United’s history.
But his United career stalled as soon as it looked like taking off. Criticism over his form and a loss of confidence saw him fall out of favor at Old Trafford, and he was eventually loaned to Real Betis in January 2025.
In Spain, Antony rediscovered his spark, scoring nine goals and providing five assists in 26 appearances under coach Manuel Pellegrini. His resurgence helped propel the Andalusian side to the Europa Conference League final, where they were beaten 4-1 by Chelsea.
Betis had made clear all summer that bringing Antony back was a priority, with Pellegrini identifying the Brazilian as central to their plans for the coming campaign.
Antony Opens Up
In May, Antony gave a revealing interview to TNT Sports Brazil, describing how his struggles at United took a toll both on and off the pitch.
“I went days without eating at United," he admitted. “I wasn’t happy, I didn’t feel that desire to play football. I needed to find myself, and I think I did that at Betis."
Given the crossroads both Antony and United were at, a permanent switch looked almost inevitable once Betis signaled their intent to negotiate.
