Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is set to complete a dramatic transfer deadline day switch to Manchester City, after the Premier League champions reportedly agreed a €35 million ($41 million) deal with PSG.
The 26-year-old Italian international, widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, will leave Paris after four years in which he played a pivotal role.
Donnarumma was instrumental in PSG’s run to their first-ever Champions League title, a historic milestone for the French club.
Enrique’s Bold Call
The move comes after head coach Luis Enrique made the surprise decision to seek a new first-choice goalkeeper for PSG.
Despite praising Donnarumma’s quality and character, Enrique explained the choice was tactical rather than personal.
“Donnarumma is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, no doubt, and even better as a person. But this is the life of high-level footballers, I am 100% responsible for this difficult decision," Enrique said.
He added: “If it were easy anyone would do it. These decisions have to do with the profile of the goalkeeper that my team needs."
PSG had already laid the groundwork for the change earlier this summer, signing 23-year-old Lucas Chevalier from Lille. Enrique has since confirmed that Chevalier will be his first-choice keeper going forward, signaling the end of Donnarumma’s time in Paris.
City’s Goalkeeping Puzzle
For Manchester City, the deal addresses a lingering question between the posts.
It had previously been assumed from reports by The Athletic that Donnarumma would only move to the Etihad Stadium if Ederson, the club’s long-standing number one, departed.
However, reports from PA Media confirm that an agreement has been reached regardless of Ederson’s status.
Brazil international Ederson is a target for Fenerbahce in a potential deal worth around €14million (£12.1m) over the closing hours of the summer window.
City had already brought in James Trafford from Burnley over the summer. The 21-year-old has started all three of their Premier League games so far this season, but he has failed to fully convince manager Pep Guardiola and his staff.
