Furman Raza Khan, son of Maulana Tauqeer Raza, the alleged mastermind of the September 2025 Bareilly violence, was taken into custody late Tuesday night after police recovered drugs and a syringe from his car following a road accident on the Lucknow–Delhi National Highway in Shahjahanpur district.

The incident occurred around 9 pm near Kachhiyani Kheda village under the Tilhar police station limits, when Furman Raza, driving a Hyundai Verna, rammed into a Sitapur depot roadways bus from behind. The impact damaged the front portion of the car, though Furman escaped without serious injuries.

According to police officials, Furman was travelling from Bareilly towards Prayagraj, where he was scheduled to meet a lawyer in connection with bail proceedings for his father, who is currently lodged in Fatehgarh jail. However, his travel plan allegedly changed midway, leading to the late-night journey through Shahjahanpur.

Suspicion arose when police reached the accident site and noticed Furman’s “unusual behaviour." When asked to open the car’s boot for inspection, he reportedly refused and began arguing with the policemen, leading to a brief commotion on the highway.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Deeksha Bhavare reached the spot along with other officers. After police intervention, the boot was opened and a suitcase was recovered from the vehicle.

“On checking the suitcase, a small packet containing approximately half a gram of suspected narcotic substance and one syringe were recovered," ASP Deeksha Bhavare said. “The accused admitted during questioning that he consumes drugs. He has been taken into custody, medically examined, and further legal action is being initiated as per procedure."

Police brought Furman Raza along with the seized items to the Tilhar police station for questioning. The white powder recovered has been sent for forensic testing to ascertain its exact composition, and sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act are likely to be invoked based on the laboratory report.

Officials said Furman initially attempted to mislead the police and resisted the search, but later disclosed his identity, stating that he was the son of Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan.

Maulana Tauqeer Raza, president of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC), has been in jail since his arrest in connection with large-scale communal violence that erupted in Bareilly on September 26, 2025. The violence broke out after Raza allegedly called on people to gather at Islamia Ground after Friday prayers and march towards the district collectorate.

Despite preventive action and house arrest orders imposed on Tauqeer Raza and his close associates, groups of worshippers attempted to move towards Islamia Ground, leading to clashes at four different locations. Police were allegedly attacked with stones, and firing incidents were reported. In response, law enforcement used batons and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

In connection with the violence, police registered 11 cases and arrested at least 84 people. Tauqeer Raza has been named as an accused in 10 of those cases.

Following the violence, authorities launched an extensive crackdown on properties linked to Tauqeer Raza and his associates. The Bareilly Development Authority and the municipal corporation have so far sealed or demolished properties worth over ₹220 crore. The power corporation has also disconnected dozens of electricity connections and issued recovery notices amounting to ₹1.5 crore.

Officials said the scale of administrative action in Bareilly mirrors the post-riot crackdown carried out earlier in Sambhal. “This is the first time in over four decades that such sweeping action has been taken against Tauqeer Raza and his network," a senior official said, citing his long political influence and association with the Ala Hazrat Dargah.

Police sources confirmed that Furman Raza’s legal status will depend on the final chemical examination report of the seized substance. “At present, he is in custody, and all actions are being taken strictly as per law," ASP Bhavare reiterated.

Further investigation into the case is underway.
